Although not actually Newcourt Road this is a short, unnamed (to the author's
knowledge), road leading to Exeter Road. The
house on the right used to be the Headmaster's house when the British
Legion used to be the Boy's School. |
Looking North towards the Square. The old brick
barn on the left is part of a farmyard group which has now been amalgamated
with other farms on the western side of the village to form a larger, more
viable unit. This barn would have been built in late Victorian or early
Edwardian times and is of brick and timber construction with a slated roof.
Earlier barns were constructed of Cob which is a mixture of clay, straw
and manure which is gradually built up to form the walls. Many old cottages
in Devon are built in the same way. Many barns have been converted in recent
years into very desirable houses. This one remains as it was. The house
on the right is called Singleton House. The road junction leads to the
right to the Bury and to the left, Exeter
Road. |
