| Note the hanging baskets hanging from the porch canopies. These cottages were probably thatched in days gone by and then slated with Welsh slates this century. So that rain runs off the thatch the roofs have to be steeply pitched (about 45 degrees). Because slate is impervious to moisture roofs can be built at much shallower angles and still stay waterproof. |
